Big Thompson Canyon Historic Tour. This tour leaves the Estes Park Museum at 11:00 a.m. and returns at approximately 4:00 p.m. Presented by historian Ken Jessen, the tour travels through Glen Haven and the Big Thompson Canyon. At the site of the Knapp family sawmill, learn about the roots of Glen Haven and the early roads into the area. Then travel to the Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch to hear about the Alexander family homestead at the mouth of the canyon. The tour will also look at the Big Dam, an engineering marvel that withstood the powerful Big Thompson Flood of 1976. Finally, the tour stops at the remains of Loveland's first hydroplant at Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park and the cabin site of pioneer Louis Papa. The tour includes transportation, snacks and water at a cost of $12 for members and $15 for non-members. Bring your own lunch or purchase food at the Glen Haven General Store. Reservations can be made beginning May 1 by calling 970-577-3762 or visiting the Museum.
