In this 2-day competition dogs from Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska pull a weighted sled with a special harness that disperses weight.
Dogs are divided into 8 weight classes, and pull the sled 16 feet within one minute. Some dogs pull over 1000 lbs - which can be as much as 10-18 times their own body weight. Dogs pull for their master's approval; if the weight gets too heavy for the dog, it simply will not pull.
The contest is sponsored by the Town of Estes Park and organized by Longs Peak Pullers. The event is sanctioned by the International Weight Pulling Association; a non-profit organization that seeks to promote the heritage of the working dog. Free.
