Exploring with Map and Compass
Rocky Mountain Nature Association Field Seminar
Among the essential skills needed for travel in the backcountry are map reading, an understanding of the compass, and the ability to use both of these tools together. Learning how to stay found is fun, interesting and can result in greater confidence for the backcountry traveler. Part of the day we'll explore such topics as cartography (map making), identifying land forms, magnetic declination, shooting bearings and measuring azimuths (angles) indoors. The outdoor portion will be spent in the field applying the skills that have been learned. Hands-on practice and problem solving will allow each participant to progress at their own pace.
