Traders, Soldiers, Indians
Traders, Soldiers and Indians: The Road to Santa Fe
Between its origins in the 1600s until the railroads terminated its usefulness in 1880, the Santa Fe Trail was one of the most important commercial "highways" in North America. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, that terminated the Mexican War, resulted in territorial expansion of the United States second only to the Louisiana Purchase. Join Dr. Robert Munkres as he describes this territorial expansion. He'll also share the comments of Thomas Fitzpatrick, the near-legendary mountain man who was the first agent for the newly created Indian Agency of the Upper Platte and Arkansas. Co-sponsored by the Estes Park Public Library Foundation and the Estes Park Museum, and funded by the Xcel Energy Foundation.
