Rocky Mountain National Park Visitor's Guide

Roads for Four-wheeling

Lake Nanita

In the Park

Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is a steep, one-way, gravel road.with spectacular views for suitable passenger cars, trucks, or SUV's. Vehicles are not allowed off-road in the Park.

In the Forests

Roosevelt and Arapaho National Forests offer many popular four-wheel driving roads for SUV's, dirt bikes and ATV's. See the Forest maps for locations; off-highway does not mean off-road. Many of these roads are adopted by local four-wheel drive clubs. Be considerate, 4-wheelers share these roads with mountain bikers, hikers and wildlife. Weather and wildlife may close roads. Check road conditions at district offices or the web links below.

The Forest Service has a project to produce Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) of areas open to motorized travel. The Sulphur Ranger District of Arapaho National Forest (west of Rocky Mountain National Park) has published one for the north area (1.4M pdf file) around Grand Lake (north of Granby and Hot Suplhur Springs) and one for the south area (775K pdf file) around Winter Park (south of Granby and Hot Suplhur Springs). The legend for both maps is on the north map.

Motor Vehicle Use Maps for the Canyon Lakes District north of Rocky Mountain National Park (east of Estes Park, west of Loveland and Fort Collins) are scheduled for the end of 2008. MVUMs for Boulder Ranger District (around Nederland, east of Rocky Mountain National Park, west of Boulder, Lyons, Longmont) and Clear Creek Ranger District (south of Rocky around Idaho Springs) are due by the end of 2009. In the meantime, use the Forest maps available from their district offices listed on our Contacts page or by order from the link on our Maps page. The Forest website has FAQs on their MVUMs.
