The Pre-Rut: Boys being Boys
In the weeks prior to the Elk Rut, you start to see the bull elk lose their velvet, and the bulls break off from their bachelor herds to start the very beginnings of herding females. The cows generally don't even think about the bulls until mid-Sept so the Bulls are more of an annoyance than anything. The females are still working on finding the last green grasses to fatten up for winter. But with the first cold nights, hints of yellow aspens in the mountains, and bugles you know the Pre-Rut is on!
