Winter Family Activities

Join a Ranger to explore the winter world of Rocky Mountain National Park.

On the East side of the Park, Winter Ecology Walks are a fun winter family activity.  In 2014 they will be held Jan 4 through March 23 on Sat., Sun., & Wed. at 12:30 pm.  Participants must be older than 8 years of age, and will need to bring your own snowshoes or traction devices depending on snow conditions.  Reservations are required and can be made a week ahead of time - call (970) 586-1223.

On the West side of the Park, beginner snowshoe programs (Winter Ecology Walks) are on Saturdays at 1 pm from Dec. 28 through Mar. 8, and intermediate snowshoe programs are on Sundays at 1 pm from Dec. 29 through Mar. 9.  Bring your own snowshoes and call (970) 627-3471 to reserve a place in advance.

Ski Kawuneechee Valley with a Ranger!  Winter Skiing Programs begin Saturday mornings December 28 - January 25 at 9:30 am.  Reserve your place by calling (970) 627-3471 up to one week ahead of time.

Full Moon Walks are another great outdoor activity in winter that the whole family can enjoy.  Join a Ranger to explore the Park under the light of the full moon on Nov. 17, Dec. 17, Jan. 15, Feb. 14, and Mar. 16.  Reservations are necessary  - call (970) 586-1223 to reserve a spot.

Other family activities in the Park during winter include:  Animals in Winter programs, and the free 23 minute Park film "Spirit of the Mountains" shown by request from 8:30am - 4pm daily at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and Kawuneechee Visitor Center.
